Oyster dam (Oesterdam) - (1979-1986)

The Oesterdam, which connects Tholen to Zuid-Beveland, is with its length of 11 kilometers the longest dam of the Delta Works. Due to the construction of the dam and the construction of the Markiezaatskade (1980-1983) the lake Zoommeer is created. This is part of the Scheldt-Rhine connection, which connects the port of Antwerp with the river Waal and thus the Rhine.

Building the Oesterdam starts with the construction of a work island in 1979. The Tholense Gat, a deep gully south of Tholen, is closed off by prolonged spraying of sand. The smaller the gap that is left to be closed, the stronger the flow. Therefore, the last part of closing the dam is postponed until the Oosterscheldekering is finished. The water flow can then be temporarily ‘switched off’ by lowering the sliders. In 1986 the dam is completed. In 1989 a main road (N659) is built on top of the dam.
