Despair and Determination

During the night of the disaster, people in the flood-stricken areas, feeling hopeless, attempted to contact the rest of the Netherlands. Only a few radio amateurs were successful—those who managed to build their own radios in the disaster zone. The rest of the country mobilized to help. Sometimes it was too late, but most often it was just in time.

In Caisson 2, you'll find stories of emotions and heroism. What was it like for the survivors of the disaster to lose their homes, friends, or family? How were they helped by others? What role did the Red Cross play? Who were the 'mud girls'? And how did the caissons of the Watersnoodmuseum come to be here?

We also commemorate in various ways the people who did not survive the disaster. All their names are inscribed on several walls, sorted by location and surname.
