About us

Our Mission

The Watersnoodmuseum keeps the memory of the 1953 Watersnoodramp and global flooding events alive. We educate people about the risks of water and climate change and foster greater engagement with solutions. Our goal is to create a safe, sustainable world with fewer flood victims.

We achieve this by sharing stories of various flood disasters. We also invite visitors from all backgrounds to reflect on water, climate change, and rising sea levels. The Watersnoodmuseum is a place where people come together to discuss water, from its tragic to its hopeful aspects. We welcome a broad audience to join this important conversation about the future of our planet.

In our mission, we adhere to cultural codes such as the Code of Diversity & Inclusion, the Fair Practice Code, and the Governance Code for Culture.

Our Organization

The Watersnoodmuseum is a registered charity (ANBI). Our official name is Stichting Nationaal Monument Watersnood 1953. This foundation is dedicated to maintaining the caissons in Ouwerkerk, preserving the memory of the 1953 Watersnoodramp, and sharing knowledge about the Netherlands' struggle against water.

We also operate Stichting Beheer Watersnoodmuseum. This foundation serves a social purpose and is not profit-oriented. It collects, preserves, and manages items for the museum collection and lends them to Stichting Nationaal Monument Watersnood 1953. It does not distribute any profits to the founders or the people working for the foundation.

The director-manager of the Watersnoodmuseum is Siemco Louwerse. The director-manager reports to the Supervisory Board.
